Dr. Alvetta Peterman Thomas Named to FCDA Board of Directors

Dr. Alvetta Peterman Thomas, a distinguished veteran educator with nearly three decades of experience in secondary and post-secondary education, currently holds the esteemed position as the President of the Executive Leadership Academy and Talent Initiatives for the Technical College System of Georgia.  

Dr. Thomas was recently appointed by the Fayette County Board of Commissioners to the Fayette County Development Authority Board. This appointment underscores her reputation as a respected figure in educational administration and her commitment to fostering workforce development in the community. 

“The FCDA is thrilled to announce the addition of Dr. Alvetta Thomas to our esteemed board of directors,” said FCDA Board Chairman Darryl A. Hicks. “Dr. Thomas brings a wealth of experience and insight that will undoubtedly strengthen our organization’s strategic vision in Fayette County.”

In December 2023, Dr. Thomas was awarded the prestigious Chett Wells Award by the Fayette Chamber of Commerce. She currently serves as Board Vice-Chair with the Fayette Chamber of Commerce. 

Previously, Dr. Thomas served as the President of Southern Crescent Technical College.  During her five-year tenure at the College, she exercised oversight over a $30 million budget and the operations of five campus locations. She also led the college to unprecedented enrollment growth, increased graduation, and placement rates as well as increased fundraising and partnerships. 

Dr. Thomas also served as the President of Atlanta Technical College for eight years. Under her leadership the college increased enrollment, developed global partnerships, and expanded campus facilities. During her tenure, Atlanta Technical College was also recognized as the 2012 Technical College System of Georgia College of the Year and America’s Best Community College in 2007. Furthermore, under her leadership the career placement rate consistently exceeded 98 percent, a testament to her dedication to preparing students for success in their chosen fields.  

Her exemplary contributions to education have garnered recognition from prestigious institutions and organizations, including the National Science Foundation, U.S. House of Representatives, and the DTAE/UGA Community and Technical College Leadership Initiative, of which she was a first-cohort graduate. She was also recognized by the State of Georgia’s Secretary of State as an Outstanding Georgia Citizen; the Ford Motor Company as an Unsung Hero;  the City of Atlanta with the coveted Phoenix Award; the University of Georgia Graduate School with the Graduate School Alumni of Distinction Award; and as one of Atlanta Magazine’s Top 500 Leaders.

Dr. Alvetta Thomas continues to inspire and lead, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of education in Georgia and beyond.
